Everyone has seen the following picture on TV at least once: the player who collected Full House sits there with a smug face and is very surprised when the opponent turns out to have a Four of a Kind or Royal Flush. Fortunately, this happens quite rarely in real life.

There is no reason to get upset. Yes, it is true that it is weaker than the aforementioned poker combinations, but in practice, losing to a higher FH combination happens more often. But the difference between an experienced poker player and a beginner is that the first one knows how to use the combination correctly and get the most out of it.

  4. The combination in Omaha

The combination consists of five cards: three of the same value and a pair. This is one of those combinations in which all five cards can take part. A simpler explanation – Full consists of a pair and a set.

Probability of forming a combination

Full House is considered one of the strongest combinations in poker, but the probability of collecting it is much higher than, say, four of a kind. As the evidence from practice shows, Full can be caught several times during a long stay at the poker table. Here are the mathematical calculations for collecting combinations:

  • Pocket pair – the probability of getting it on the flop is 1%.
  • Two different value cards as hole cards – 0.1% on the flop.
  • On the flop, a three of a kind increases the chance of forming on the turn to 13%.
  • With a three of a kind on the flop, the probability of collecting a Full House in poker before the river is 30%.
  • With a three of a kind on the turn, the chance of hitting the river is 19.5%.
  • It’s hard to make FH with two pairs on the flop before the turn. The probability is 8.5%.
  • With two pairs on the flop, the chance of collecting before the river is 16.5%.
  • Two pairs on the turn result in a 9% chance that the player will hit FH before the river.

Whose Full House is higher?

In poker, one combination is inferior to another one. When two players at the same gaming table collect a Full, the hierarchy is determined by looking at the three. The player who has a stronger combination of the three cards wins. For example, if you have collected a set of three tens and two kings, and your opponent has three nines and two aces – you will win, according to the three cards.

But what happens in a situation where both FH combinations have matching three cards?

In this case, the winner is determined by the two cards, similar to the principles above. Example: A hand with three tens and two queens is stronger than a hand with three tens and two jacks.

Hands in Hold’em

To establish the features and strengths of the Full House hand combination in poker, it is necessary to understand the principle of its formation. In the most popular form of poker, Texas Hold’em, FH is formed by one of the four options:

  • A pocket pair plus a common three of a kind on the game table.
  • Two different value pocket cards plus three shared cards: one of the pocket ones matches a shared pair, and the other one makes a two with a shared card.
  • Full House is collected from one hole pocket, and four community cards: the pocket card pairs up with one of the community cards, and a three of a kind is formed from the cards on the game table.
  • Five community cards: there is a pair and a three of a kind on the game table. The strongest pocket card determines the rank.

When analyzing a hand, you should always take into account which way the combination was made because it is what decides which Full House is higher. Based on this information, it is possible to decide on a further strategy in poker:

  • If FH is formed from community cards, then all opponents have this combination. It also means someone has a stronger hand than you. This is why, in such a situation, it is better not to take risks and, if opponents play aggressively, get rid of the cards.
  • FH, made up of two hole cards and three community cards, provides an opportunity to play bolder. If preflop behaviour is not too aggressive, it is considered a good sign.
  • Full House in poker, formed from two unpaired pocket cards and three community cards, provides an opportunity to be more aggressive, increasing the pot. Opponents are unlikely to be able to know your hand and may interpret your actions as a bluff.

Also, note that the combination is stronger than the flush and straight.

The combination in Omaha

In the second most popular poker discipline – Omaha – Full House is formed according to similar principles, but there are a number of distinctive features here. For example, in Omaha, FH must include both hole cards. Therefore, this combination can be formed in two ways:

  • Pocket pair and common three.
  • A pocket card plus an identical card on the game table and a pocket card plus a community pair.

Probability of Forming a Full House in Omaha:

  • With a pocket pair, the probability of collecting on the flop is 1%.
  • With two pocket pairs, the odds are twice as high.
  • With four different cards, the chance of getting FH on the flop is 0.3%.
  • A three-of-a-kind on the flop increases the chance of collecting on the turn to 27%.
  • The presence of a three of a kind on the flop can guarantee a hand on the river by 52%.
  • With a three of a kind on the turn, the chance to collect on the river is 34% in poker.
  • Two pairs on the flop give you a 9% chance.
  • Two pairs on the flop increase the chances of collecting the FH on the river by up to 17%.
  • There is a 9% chance of a collection on the river with two pairs on the turn.

Full House is one of the strongest combinations in poker, but its collection does not guarantee victory. Experts advise playing carefully because it is likely that the opponents have the same combination. Experienced players try not to give out the strength of their hand ahead of time, when they have a Full, to watch the behaviour of opponents and accumulate a solid amount of money.

We looked at what a Full House combination in poker is – it is a combination of a Pair and a Three of a Kind. The hand is one of the strongest ones. This combination will give you a higher chance of winning. The player needs to be able to deal with the layout correctly to get the most out of the combination. You can also play other casino games.
